Mental health, mental health, mental health.” This is probably a statement that you hear quite more often than the famous phenomena of artificial intelligence across all communication media in the 21st century. This is rightfully applicable especially in the case of our lovely country Uganda where through a statistical survey by Ministry of health shows an alarming 25% increase in mental health cases over the last four years with an estimation of 12% of our population experiencing probable mental health challenges having depression and anxiety as the major protagonists in this brewing horror.
In respect to the advent of men’s mental health awareness month which was concluded in June this year, this article will be tackling a few of the dynamics of the new unfortunate wave of a rampant decline of mental resilience amongst men. First and foremost, it is important for all of us to appreciate that one of the biggest causes of depression as an example of mental challenges is poor management of expectations which could simply be termed as disappointment, this covers disappointment arising from romantic affairs, business, family, academics among many others. Our education systems have deluded us to into thinking that giving your all is a guarantee of success but unfortunately the game of life is not fair, it owes nothing to anyone and those that fall trap to the spell often become victim to depression and other mental illnesses.
In addition to that, I believe men’s mental health is in jeopardy due to ruthless wave of social anxiety which has been built through the unnecessary comparisons we have pinned on each other as men basing off what we see from social media platforms whereby different individuals portray a lifestyle that they are probably living or are pretending to live which leaves a lot of guys out here with feelings of lack of accomplishment and failure , all these are feelings that are extremely detrimental to men considering the high regard we have for our ego which is a big fuel reserve for masculinity . Besides the stated above there are many other causes of decline in men’s mental health that cannot be exhausted but just with few more being; emotional isolation from friends, family which inhibits connectivity , poor life style choices characterized by laziness, substance abuse where we see 28% of urban youth in Uganda aged 15-24 drinking alcohol regularly as a coping mechanism to distress with another 15% opting for cannabis which ultimately lays ground for more damaging conditions like psychosis(basically loss of contact with reality).
